IT "Best Practice"

Yes it is prudent to follow best practice guidelines. However, those guidelines are generalisations and usually aimed at the larger European or American organisations. How relevent are they to the NZ organisation which operates on a different scale and within a different culture? An SME in the US is quite different to an SME in NZ. Compliance requirements are likewise different, as is the scale of IT support.

In my experience, recommended best practice should be heeded for the IT infrastructure in order to simplify support. For the otrher technologies it would be foolishly extravagent to rigidly adhere to recommended best practice without taking into consideration the nature of the individual organisation.

Knowledge Sharing

The typical client has a handful of staff managing their business. And as staff turn over, critical business and systems knowledge is and will be lost.

Which is why it is paramount that knowledge be openly shared and system procedures documented.
